Aphrodisias

November 30th, 2009 by Tamra

Tetrapylon at AphrodisiasWe stopped at Aphrodisias on our way to from Selçuk to Pamukkale. This ancient city was home to a sculpture school, so there are a lot of reliefs and statues to see. There is a pleasant central entrance area to the site that consists of gift shops, tea shops, and a very good museum. The ancient city, arranged around this area, has market places, a council chamber, baths, a theater, a stadium, and the remains of a Temple of Aphrodite. The temple (behind the tetrapylon) had been “re-purposed” as a Christian church, and there isn’t much left to see now. The tetrapylon is amazing, isn’t it?

Stadium at AphrodisiasThe stadium was huge, 270 meters long, and space for 30,000 people. I don’t think the photo conveys its size very well.

There are a few more photos on my Flickr site – here. From Aphrodisias, we drove on to our last stop, Pamukkale.

  • Yes, indeed, these ruins are amazing as they reflect the achievements of ancient cultures it is so easy for our modern age to underestimate.
