Princes’ Islands

Near Istanbul in the Sea of Marmara is a chain of nine small islands called the Princes’ Islands. Some are inhabited and others are not. Throughout history, these islands have been used as places of exile and places of contemplation. Regular ferry service from Istanbul to the largest inhabited islands makes it an easy day trip.

We visited two of the islands with Friends of the American Research Istitute in Turkey (FARIT). Our guide was John Freely who has written several books about Istanbul. Our first stop was the uninhabited island of Sivriada. Although only cats live there now, the island holds the ruins of an old monastery, a wrecked house, and a stone quarry that has almost leveled parts of the island.

Stone Steps

Our second stop was Burgazada. Burgazada is very peaceful. No cars are allowed on the island, so all traffic is on foot or by bicycle or carriage. The island is small and walking is easy. The main sights are the monasteries and churches and the home of a famous Turkish writer, Sait Faik Abasiyanik.
