Our first stop was the city of Bursa, the first capital of Ottoman Empire, the end of the Silk Road, and a geologically active spot that has mountains and hot springs.

1. Visit the Silk Bazaar in the Koza Han and the Great Mosque.
2. Get soaped, scrubbed and massaged in one of the Turkish bathhouses.
3. Wander up the hill to see the Green Tomb and Green Mosque of Sultan Mehmet I.
After spending the night in Bursa, we drove to the northern Aegean coast, somewhere between Küçükkuyu and Assos. We stayed at the Kumbağ Otel, a clean and comfortable place that caters to families. The atmosphere is friendly and the food is good.
4. Eat lunch at the sea coast village of Behramkale.

5. Climb or drive to the Greek theater, temple to Athena, and necropolis. Look for the remains of the school Aristotle founded here in 340 B.C.
6. Visit the Olive Oil Museum in Küçükkuyu.
7. Drive to the mountains to see the old Greek village and the nearby altar to Zeus.

8. Visit olive oil factories to taste and buy different kinds of olive oil. It’s kind of like touring the wineries in California, but with olive oil and bread.
9. Stop in the mountain villages and roadside stands to buy dried herbs, soaps, and locally made textiles.
10. Drive to the seaside town of Ayvaluk to eat more fish and buy more oil.
