Robert College is located on a steep hill near the village of Arnavutkoy. Arnavutkoy (”the Albanian village”) is a little fishing town with lots of shops and simple restaurants. It is located between two more chi-chi, popular towns, and expensive towns. So far, we have done most of our grocery shopping in the village. There is a nice, but limited, Tuesday market that is good for fruits and vegetables. There are a couple of small grocery stores, some bakeries and butchers. Because our apartment is about two-thirds of the way up the hill and near the center of the campus, there is always a hill or steep steps to contend with as we make our way through the woods with our bags and packages. I think we are burning more calories by buying our groceries in the village than we are getting by eating them.

This is one of the streets we take coming home from Arnavutkoy. There is a nice view of the Bosphorus at the end of the street, but here we turn to go uphill into the woods.

Thinking of how heavy our grocery bags are when we have to carry them only from the garage to the kitchen, I can imagine how you must have to limit your purchases each day. Wish we were there to help — (and to enjoy!)

Not as though either of you are chunky monkeys to begin with.
Can you condition yourselves to cycling the gradients? Take the bike messengers of San Francisco as role models - not to mention cyclists you must have seen in the Spain. If you have to get off and push, at least you are pushing bags in baskets and hanging from handlebars, not carrying them.
