I suppose learning something new can be a rite of passage (Read Write Poem), but the main inspiration came from this TED Talk by Margaret Wertheim.
Old Dog
Today I learned that frilly things,
coral reefs, sea slugs, lettuce leaves,
display a geometry more complex
than a mere line or a sphere,
and that this knowledge
is better embodied
in crocheted ruffles
than in numbers.
And while you can get a nice ruffle
by crocheting three increasing one
again and again and again…
breaking out of that pattern
will bring an unexpected zing
to the most mundane edge.

nicely done. i love this
All these wonderful ruffles! Aren’t edges amazing things to write about.
I love all the images collected here–from sea slugs to crocheted edges. Nice.
The combination of the frilly and mundane is wonderful. The last line is brilliant. And I love how you build up to it; the rhythm is very smooth.
Nicely!
Very clever how you broke out of the sonnet pattern to write this sonnet! Well done!
Breaking out of that pattern..
Great phrase!
