Tomorrow, May 4, is Hosni Mubarak’s 80th birthday. The opposition parties have called for a general strike to protest rising prices. In April, the military quelled a strike. On Thursday, the government promised a 30% raise to employees. Here are some articles about the problems here.

    Thanks for adding another source to news junkie’s list- ADN Kronos ( sounds more Greek than Italian though)

    Bread (and water) will surpass oil as issues. Egypt has long tradition of supporting bread prices. I remember “organized spontaneous demonstrations” in the 60s about US cutting off wheat shipments (because of Egypt taking military aid from Russia). At this time, the World Bank & IMF were also pressuring Egypt to cease subsidies.
